No appetite? No Problem

Title: sometimes ice cream is the healthiest option. Image: ice cream sundae in a chalice-style bowl. Surrounded by a green line border

My biggest challenge with ARFID is the lack of appetite that I have to work through. This means that even if I feel physical hunger, I don’t feel the desire to eat. It takes a lot of effort to eat even when my body feels like it would rather do anything else.

This is an ongoing challenge for me, but I am working through it day by day. Instead of letting myself get bogged down, I look for something that would bring me joy. Fed Is Best. So, sometimes I’ll have ice cream as a meal. Sometimes I eat the exact same meal multiple times in the same day. I have been trying to get out of the habit of feeling wrong or shame for doing this.

Spiral Ice Cream Sundae

  • Ice cream of your choice
  • Almond slivers
  • Coconut flakes
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Milk (optional)

Scoop your ice cream into a cup or bowl. Top with almonds, coconut, and chocolate chips. Add milk if you want to thin the ice cream into a smoother mixture.

The ice cream and milk provides protein while the almonds and coconut provides fats. We’re meeting all of our desired categories of food: carbs, protein, and fat

If you have been struggling with eating for a long period, then the carbs in this will provide a needed boost while the protein and fat will help level out the blood sugar levels over time. Instead of trying to force myself into something traditionally “healthy” by society’s standards, I go for something that brings me happiness and carbs when my body is in need.
