ARFID is the shortened name for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. It is a condition that makes it difficult for a person to eat regularly. It is commonly considered an eating disorder, but it is not related to body image or wanting to change one’s looks.
Within this blog, I am focusing on my own experiences with ARRID, but there are many experiences that others have with ARFID. Some common feelings with ARFID are 1) loss of interest with eating, 2) feeling anxious about eating or possibly choking, and 3) avoiding unwanted textures or smells. Some people with ARFID also create rituals around eating such as eating in a specific order.
Personally, my biggest issues with ARFID have been loss of interest in food, lack of appetite, and avoiding unwanted textures.
If you feel as though you might have ARFID, the best way to seek treatment is through a therapist and a dietician that understands ARFID. I, personally, have had difficulties receiving a diagnosis due to my weight, but my dietician and therapist both believe that weight is the least important factor in this, and they believe me when I tell them that there is something going on.
If you want to do more research on ARFID, I recommend with medical articles to get an understanding before diving into personal testimonies of folks with ARFID.
If you want to find community with others experiencing ARFID, the r/ARFID subreddit is an amazing community.
